Yay! It's Autumn, its kind of acceptable to wear a scarf now?
Any way, about two Sundays ago I watched this movie called Fed Up, and it was bit of an eye opener.
I mean I knew that food companies stretched the truth about their products and how usually their "healthier" option isn't any better than their regular option.
I've definitely been guilty about that, you see low-fat, low-sodium, or full of protein on a box and you think you're being healthy! From this movie I got that they put a TON of sugar in everything, and the government can't control it cause the food companies say it's "too controlling."
But child obesity is a serious problem, they were saying that children are more likely to die before their parents because of obesity! How insane is that?!
I would highly suggest watching it! It's on netflix.
So at the end of the movie they suggest to do a 10 day sugar free challenge, and I was all pumped with all this knowledge, so I was like, "heck yeah!" and Kevin agreed to do it with me cause he's all healthy to begin with.
Of course we just went grocery shopping the day before with dinners planned and uh my birthday cake already decided (WHICH WAS SO GOOD AND FULL OF SUGAR) so we planned for the week after (this week).
I went to Pinterest for sugar free recipes, which basically is a plant based diet. You want to stay away from processed foods and eat a lot, a lot, of vegetables. Now if you don't like vegetables, there are plenty of rice and bean scenarios and pasta dishes. Spaghetti sauce has a lot of added sugar though.
So far I have made us, a curry tomato potato with eggs dish, (which I didn't realize tomatoes have sugar, it's natural but I wanted to cut it all out) a burrito bowl with rice, black beans, avocado, and soy chorizo, a roasted cauliflower head with rice, (I just roasted it with butter, it literally had no flavor, I'm gonna try and make a soup with the left overs) and tonight we're having sauteed kale and butternut squash.
Breakfast is probably the most difficult. I usually put sugar in my coffee and oatmeal. I've been making eggs each morning so far but I can only eat so much of scrambled eggs until I'm over it.
I found this website dedicated to sugarless recipes.
But I feel good, I guess? It's probably part placebo effect.
I like taking the time and effort to look at ingredients and seeing what I am putting into my body.
On to other things, we went to Asheville NC last weekend, and it was a lot of fun! It was a beautiful day and there were a bunch of little shops and restaurants. I brought my camera, but then I realized I did not want to carry it around, but next time we go I'll take some photos. The photo above is on the way to.
Last but not least, my artwork.
I cut the majority of "The Kiss", the first photo below, I want texture for the background, I put a bunch of rubber cement on it and it's still drying, I'm 99% positive it will come off the first time I wash off the ink, so I'm still thinking of other ways to make texture. I'm curious to see how it will look though.
The rest of the photos are my next little projects. I follow someone on instagram that has a pet fox, and I asked If I could use their photo to make a linocut and they said yes!
The cats were inspired by an actual photo I saw of a cat with a flower crown and sunglasses. It doesn't take much for me to draw cats. Hopefully they turn out okay!
Thanks For Reading!
Here's an awesome yoga video I found! It made me feel a lot better!
Today is my birthday! I am turning 24! It is so weird to me. Kevin made me a sign out of post its and put ribbons on the door and gave me my gift and a muffin. All of it was very sweet.
We're gonna have cake tonight but other than that I don't really have a plan. Keeping it low-key. Plus we don't know anyone down here so it makes it pretty easy to be low key. haha.
Anyway I crafted this week. I made a bunch of little soaps. Now I am shipping them off to some lucky people. I went to JoAnns and bought little cardboard boxes and decided to decorate them.
Toffer my model.
It was a fun little craft to do. I also bought this nice blue yarn and am currently knitting a scarf! It's a good activity to do at night. I've already gone through one ball of yarn already! I am looking forward to how it comes out.
So as you all know, I did not bring my press down to Tennessee. So that's why I'm focusing on just stamps because I obviously don't need a press for that. But I'm working on a couple different projects that I need to proof to see what I'm doing. I have my handy dandy barren, and it's awful!
I've been spoiled with my press. All I had to do was spin a wheel 5 times? And now it takes me about 8 minutes to get a decent proof? I had two workouts that day. My upper body was so sore. I'm not sure what that says about me? aha.
I LOVE THIS STAMP. It's so pretty. I ordered it in wrapping paper on Spoonflower, I should be getting it soon. So I am just going to wrap things that are completely unnecessary to wrap. Hopefully it turns out okay!
Also printed this pumpkin, which I think is adorable.
I've been working on one of my bigger projects, and it's going well so far. Haven't stabbed myself with the tool yet.
I've started watching The Good Wife on Amazon Prime, while working. I'm still on season 1. I like it, but I'm not obsessed with it.
I really need to find the perfect table and chair. I am always hunched over and my lower back and neck ends up hurting by the end of the day. I'm curious about the tables that go at a angle, I know there's a term for it, it's just not coming to me at the moment.
I just love this photo, cause Toffer looks like a yellow slug that's squinting at me and I am doing the side eye with my potato salad.
Moochie is doing well so far! She's been on the pills prescribed to her for about five days now. I have to get her blood work next Sunday. She's been taking the pills easily, I read that the side effects could show up the second week so I'll just be keeping an eye on her.
If anyone could donate for her that would be great!
September is already going by so quickly! Kevin keeps bringing up my birthday and I keep forgetting that it's this coming Thursday! You know that song? By Blink 182, What's My Age Again? I'm pretty sure no one is gonna like me when I'm 24 either. aha.
ANYWHO, Monday was Labor Day, I like to make a nice dinner for any holiday or at least be somewhat festive. I recently bought this cookbook, Date Night In by Ashley Rodriguez. She has a blog called Not Without Salt, and it's beautiful blog! The cookbook is amazing, granted I've only made one thing so far, but it's wonderful to look at and I want to cook more things from the book.
We decided to make a German Pretzel Sandwich? I don't remember exactly what it was called and I am too lazy to get up and get the cookbook. But pretty much it was an Italian sausage, she instructed pickled peppers, but I just sauteed them (because again, laziness) with a mustard cream cheese spread on a pretzel roll. Okay I've never made pretzel rolls and let me tell you, it did not go well. I must of done something wrong with the dough, because it didn't rise enough, but I rarely make bread so I didn't know how much it needed to raise? And apparently, the way you make the pretzel part is dark brown sugar, baking soda and water all boiled together and you dip the dough in the pot for about a minute.
My rolls tasted like an okay pretzel but they were so flat! Fortunately Trader Joe's was open and they had individual pretzel rolls.
I also made potato salad which was very good and then we had s'mores!
I took Moochie to the vet and she got some blood work, and I got the results on Wednesday and they told me that she had Hyperthyroidism. Long story short, I have to give her pills for two weeks, get her blood checked again to see if her kidneys are okay and then go from there. There is an expensive but much more effective method I am looking into if her kidneys are okay, I started a GoFundMe with all the information. Any little amount would be extremely helpful! It could be my birthday gift!
I understand Moochie is an older kitty, but I just got her here to Tennessee and I want her to stick around a little bit longer.
I have to get over the hurdle of the Kidney Failure stuff because if she has bad kidneys then unfortunately she doesn't have much time left. I have had two pets die from it and it's not pretty. Apparently the hyper thyroid hides kidney functions in the bloodwork, that's why I'm going back after two weeks. I hate giving my pets medication. There are always side effects and it just kills them. So I'm gonna watch her like a hawk the moment I get the medication.
So as of now, I'm just hugging her a bit more these days, cause I don't know what's gonna happen, I'm trying to stay positive but I am such a cynical person.
So I have been figuring out vet stuff mostly this week, but I made a little stamp!
I made an illustrated version of it already. I've had a Spoonflower account for awhile now, but for some reason I can never figure out how to get a sample? I don't want to buy a whole roll of something that looks bad? I feel like I'm missing a big obvious button on the page, I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I'd love to start selling wrapping paper. I think that would be so fun.
Other than that I started watching Narcos on Netflix, it's about the Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar and it is SO GOOD. I finished the entire season in three days? I think it was 10 episodes. If you're not into violence I wouldn't suggest it. There's a lot of people shooting other people. Obviously the story is dramatized but I mean this guy was crazy in real life. I totally understand why Colombia has that stereotype about cocaine now because in the 80s he literally had an empire. So yeah, it's fascinating and horrifying and totally engrossing.
And Kevin bought me some flowers, what a sweetheart.
Have a great weekend everyone!
